Archives serving intellectual property: Jules Maciet’s legacy

Classifying, cataloguing… Every day, Paperz IP’s documentalists build up what is our strength: our archives. Carefully composed of specialist books, sales catalogues and magazines on manufactured products (jewellery, bags, shoes, furniture, lighting, tableware, toys, gadgets, cosmetics, watches, etc.), these archives are processed by our experts to extract thousands of designs, classified by brand, type and date. It’s a goldsmith’s work, reminiscent of the mission Jules Maciet set himself.

Who was Jules Maciet ?

A visionary collector, Jules Maciet (1846-1911) devoted his life to one goal: to collect, classify and archive the forms, patterns, objects and allegories of his time. From 1887 onwards, he began on a fascinating encyclopaedic quest, building up an archive from cut-outs and collages of engravings, samples, photographs and lithographs. Methodically, he built up an eclectic collection that included lace, tiles, decorations, gardens, ceramics, etc. All these items were meticulously preserved in 4,729 unique albums, organised into 494 themes: the result of this painstaking work was a titanic collection!

Thanks to this iconographic documentation, Maciet embodied the encyclopaedic spirit of the 19th century. Today, his work is a veritable visual library and a precious witness to his era. The Maciet albums are now housed at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, where Jules Maciet was chairman of the commission from 1895 to 1911.

Our unique archive

15 years ago, Camille Champion, founder of Paperz IP, regularly visited the MAD to consult these works. Maciet’s impressive work inspired her. Today, Paperz IP also has a unique archive comprising thousands of works on products manufactured since the beginning of the 20th century.  We are proud to have our own collection of books, brochures and magazines, with contemporary designs classified and inventoried, directly accessible by our teams in our offices, in order to meet our customers’ deadline requirements. Of course, Paperz IP has also developed technological tools and software to help us search for designs and trademarks.

Our tailored services

With our rich collection, we offer a documentary search service on trademarks and designs. But we don’t stop there: we carry out searches in a wide range of media, including the Internet, international museums and over 70 IP designs registers around the world. We also have access to databases containing thousands of titles from the local and national daily press, the specialist and business press in many countries, enabling us to target specific territories and sectors of activity such as catering or energy. These databases are very useful for trademark searches (proofs of reputation, proofs of use, proofs of acquired distinctiveness through use, etc.). We also conduct prior art searches on designs whether as a preventive measure or in the event of litigation.

Our work is meticulous and efficient. Thanks to our expertise, we can carry out in-depth investigations to meet your requirements.
