A look back at APRAM x EUIPO 2025: Review of decisions in trademark and design law

The end of 2025 was marked by an unmissable event for intellectual property professionals: the annual conference organised by APRAM (Association of Trademark and Design Law Practitioners), in partnership with EUIPO (European Union Intellectual Property Office). Like every year, this event brought together lawyers, legal counsels, IP consultants and other industry experts to analyse major decisions on trademarks and designs in the European Union.

Paperz IP was delighted to once again be a partner of this meeting alongside with Fovea IP, providing an opportunity for Marina Trucharte, Head of Research, and Agathe Curis, Head of Strategy and Development, to exchange views with numerous IP practitioners.

An essential review of the latest intellectual property decisions in 2025

The 2025 edition of the conference was co-chaired by Isabelle Thill and Delphine Rullier, respectively Chair and Vice-Chair of the International and European Relations Committee.

Agathe Curis had the pleasure of presenting our services to an audience of IP professionals. More than 800 people attended the conference, either in person or online.

Trademark law decisions: an enriching morning

The event opened with a message from João Negrão, Executive Director of the EUIPO. This was followed by a series of presentations focusing on trademark law. These provided an opportunity to review:

  • The major decisions of the year on absolute grounds, presented by Dorian Guiu, solicitor at Guiu IP.
  • Mediation in action at the EUIPO, introduced by Emilie Scheffer from the EUIPO Board of Appeal.
  • A presentation of the CEIPI Chair by Yann Basire, Director General of CEIPI
  • The obligation to use and the use of (overly) general terms to designate goods and services, by Katia Manhaeve, partner at /c law (Luxembourg)
  • Trademarks on screen in cinematographic and audiovisual works, presented by Cédric Monnerie, partner at Intervista.

Decisions in trademark and design law: a time for review

Following the cocktail reception sponsored by Fovea IP and Paperz IP, discussions resumed in the early afternoon, focusing in particular on designs.

More specifically, the following topics were addressed:

  • Improvement of decisions by the Boards of Appeal with Arnaud Folliard-Monguiral, Board of Appeals at EUIPO.
  • Major decisions of the year concerning designs, presented by Joséphine Szafarczyk, solicitor at Klyb Avocats.
  • Major decisions of the year on relative grounds in the field of trade marks by Ali Boudjedir, CPI at Santarelli
  •  Foreclosure by tolerance in EU and French case law, by Michaël Piquet-Fraysse, partner at EBL Lexington

Once again this year, the event was a real success, rich in learning, encounters and sharing. We are delighted to see so many of our clients and partners return each year.
